Know What to Expect in Apartment Hunting

Article by: Becky Loker

Apartment hunting can be an exciting, but sometimes overwhelming, time. Use these tips to keep you focused and get the most out of your apartment hunting experience. It’s best to start searching for an apartment before you actually need it. During your hunt for an apartment you may find several matches that meet all or most of your criteria. To narrow down your search, call or email the community at least 45 - 60 days before you plan your move date and ask them what they have available. If they have an apartment available in your time frame, set up an appointment immediately to view the apartment and the community. They may only have one apartment available, which someone could rent before you get a chance to see it.

Get Excited!

You will be making numerous calls and emails. Keep organized by starting a phone log or email log.

Get Ready for Success!

Select the listings that you want to view, or learn more about, and set up your appointments. Try to view as many communities as possible to get a feel for how much apartment you can get for your money. Make sure to use the Shop-and-Compare function on ApartmentShowcase.com to easily compare all of your options.

Be prepared for your appointment!

Familiarize yourself with the information that the apartment community leasing professional will request from you to apply to lease an apartment.

  • Pay stubs
  • Rental references
  • Credit check
  • Application fee (money order or check, no cash)

Ask Questions!

Don't assume! If you don’t know where something is or you aren’t sure about the rental terms, ask!

  • Where are the laundry facilities?
  • Where is the parking?
  • How much do utilities cost?
  • What day is the first month’s rent due?
  • How much is the security deposit?
  • When will you get it back?
  • Where is the closest grocery store?
  • What schools are nearby?
  • Is there a deposit for keys?
  • Will the carpet be cleaned?
  • Are you going to paint the apartment?

Don't be afraid to negotiate!

There are some properties that may offer specials. Ask if they are running any specials in any advertisement that you could take advantage of today!

Have your Deposit Ready!

If someone else puts in their application and deposit before you, it is possible you will lose out on your dream apartment.

Don't Procrastinate!

If all of your questions have been answered and you found the right apartment that meets your budget and priorities, get ready to sign the lease! Learn more about understanding your lease.

Finding the right apartment means taking the time to organize and prepare yourself for a successful Apartment Hunt. Most apartment leases are signed for twelve months. Therefore, making sure your “ducks are in a row” before you sign for a twelve month commitment will ensure that you find the right apartment! When you lease at your new apartment community, please tell them that you found them on ApartmentShowcase.com.
